Kip Uhlhorn formed Cloudland Canyon in 2002 Simon Wojan. After several years of long distance collaboration (and recording sessions held in the US and Germany, the first Cloudland Canyon release, Requiems Der Natur, 2002-2004 was released by Tee Pee in 2006 and was largely a collection of older works and experiments. Cloudland Canyon quickly set about releasing a number of other releases and touring that same year, most notably a single track collaboration 12”/LP entitled Exterminating Angel with Chicago musician Lichens in 2007 on Holy Mountain.

In 2007, the band was signed to Kranky and released their first proper album Silver Tongued Sisyphus. In 2008, the band released another collaborative 12” with Mythical Beast on Not Not Fun, as well as their second full length, Lie in Light on Kranky. The latter was chosen as one of top 25 albums of the year 2008 by the Magnet magazine. Cloudland Canyon subsequently moved to Holy Mountain, where the band began their own imprint of Holy Mountain (Intercoastal Artists) for 2010’s album Fin Eaves, which has become their best-received work to date, landing on numerous year-end lists. They went on tour with the Flaming Lips (whom Uhlhorn has collaborated extensively with) as well as with Interpol and Bear in Heaven. Members of the Arcade Fire even name checked the band.

Uhlhorn has also played in several other successful groups and bands during this time, including King Khan & the ShrinesPanthers(Dim Mak, Vice/Atlantic Records), Pharaohs (100% Silk, Stone's Throw, Intercoastal Artists), Eden Express (Holy Mountain), and Tav Falco's Panther Burns He has also played guitar live and on albums by Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, including Chatham's Crimson Grail, which was staged at Lincoln Center. Most recently, memphis drummer Ross Johnson (Tav Falco's Panther BurnsAlex Chilton) has joined the band.

Cloudland Canyon continues to release records with musical reference points in krautrock repetition and drone, shoegaze haze and even cosmic disco.

Recently, Uhlhorn began working with Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) formerly of the band Spacemen 3 and currently of Spectrum, and Experimental Audio Research. 2012 saw Uhlhorn  Cloudland Canyon collaborate with longtime friend Robert A.A. Lowe (of Lichens, OM,) on the score for the film Miss Lovely which won the “Un Certain Regard” prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, Cloudland Canyon began work on a new album in the latter half of the year with Sonic Boom (whose production credits include MGMT, Panda Bear) producing and mixing the album which was released by Light in the Attic/ Intercoastal Artists in 2016. In 2016 Uhlhorn has performed live with Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips (Galaxie 500, Luna, Dean & Britta,) who composed the soundtracks to several of Noah Baumbach's films( The Squid & The Whale, Francis Ha, Mistress America.)

Also the name of a state park in Georgia, experimental outfit Cloudland Canyon carry on the abstract electronic sounds pioneered by such artists as Ash Ra Tempel and Edgar Froese, while touching on elements of dream pop and occasionally flirting with stargazing disco rhythms. The project began in 2002 when Kip Uhlhorn, the Brooklyn-based guitarist for Panthers (and prior to that screamo band the Red Scare) met German multi-instrumentalist Simon Wojan when Uhlhorn was touring Europe. Following a brief recording session and a few years of track-trading between Uhlhorn and Wojan -- along with contributions from Jacob Morris (the Double), Jerry Fuchs (Turing Machinethe Juan MacLean.)-- Tee Pee released the debut Requiems der Natur 2002-2004 in 2006.

The band moved to Kranky for its 2007 EP Silver Tongued Sisyphus and released Exterminating Angel, a 30-minute single-track collaboration with Lichens, later that year on Holy Mountain. Lie in Lightfollowed on Kranky in early 2008, and a split 12" EP with Mythical Beast appeared on Not Not Fun that year. Wojan left the group, eventually joining King Khan & the ShrinesCloudland Canyon returned to Holy Mountain, establishing their own imprint Intercoastal Artists and issuing the more shoegaze-flavored Fin Eaves in the fall of 2010. The album was well received, leading to tours with the Flaming LipsInterpol, and Bear in Heaven

Following limited 7" singles on Intercoastal Artists (a split release with Citay) and Bathetic Records, Cloudland Canyon centered around Kip Uhlhorn as well as Memphis-based drummer Ross Johnson, of Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Uhlhorn worked with producer Sonic Boom (formerly of Spacemen 3), who mastered three 12" releases by the group in 2012: Born Blonde (Trensmat), Prophetic Frequencies (Monofonus Press), and Aureliua (The Great Pop Supplement). Uhlhorn also collaborated with Robert A.A. Lowe (Lichens, OM,) on the score to the 2012 Indian drama film Miss Lovely.

As Cloudland Canyon began working on their third proper album with Sonic Boom, they released a split 7" single with Disappears on Sonic Cathedral Recordings in late 2013, and a split 7" with Lorelle Meets the Obsolete on God Unknown Records in 2015. Finally, the full-length An Arabesque appeared on Medical Records in early 2016. Featuring a vast lineup of guest musicians including M. Geddes GengrasSonic Boom, and former members of Big Starthe Flaming Lips, and LCD Soundsystem, the album found the group incorporating a cosmic space disco influence along with its usual Krautrock and dream pop sounds.
